Strong prices for cull cows

CATTLE trade was steady at Markethill on Tuesday. Cull cows continued to attract very strong prices, both for FQA and non-FQA stock.

In the dairy ring to price of £1750 was paid for a calved heifer from a Loughgall farmer.  The same owner received £1480 for a calved heifer.  A Fermanagh farmer received £1350 for a calved heifer.  Cows and calves sold to £1520 for a Lim cow and heifer calf from a Newry farmer.  An entry of in-calf cows sold to £800 each with several more from £650 to £795 each.

CULL COWS

The 100 cull cows sold in an exceptionally firm demand.  Cow/heifers to £196 for 570k at £1115 and up to £1280 for 710k (180).  Fleshed cows from £135 to £161 per 100 kilos and 840k at £1350.  Young Friesian to £145 for 610k at £885.  Friesian cows from £115 to £134 for 620k at £830.  Second quality friesians from £90 to £105 per 100 kilos and the poorest types from £65 to £85 per 100 kilos.  Aged bulls from £130 to £144 for 870k at £1250 and up to £1360 for 1000k (136).  OTM clean cattle to £181 for 630k steer at £1140.

Middleweight bullocks sold to £225 for 470k at £1060 followed by £216 for 490k at £1060.  Main demand from £175 to £200 per 100 kilos.  Lightweights from £175 to £202 per 100 kilos with a top of £210 for 360k at £755.  Forward steers to £207 for 520k at £1075 and up to £1105 for 560k (197).  Main demand from £177 to £205 per 100 kilos.  Good friesians sold from £135 to £164 for 400k at £655.

The 140 dropped calves sold in an excellent demand with bulls selling to £335, £330 and £315 all for Simms from a Hamiltonsbawn farmer.  Main demand from £230 to £290.  Heifers sold from £140 to £230 for an Angus.

The 100 reared calves sold readily.  Bulls to £740 for a Char.  Several more from £550 to 3720.  Heifers from £460 to £595 each.
