Woman accused of breaching lifetime ban on reporting victim of sexual offence

A Co Armagh woman is to appear in court accused of breaching a lifetime ban on reporting the victim of sexual offence.

The case against Joleen Shortt, of Dungormley Estate in Newtownhamilton, was opened at Newry Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The 23-year-old is accused of a single count of publishing a comment “which was likely to lead members of the public to identify a person as the person against whom a qualifying offence is alleged to have been committed”.

The alleged offence occurred on May 11, 2023.

Defence barrister Ronan McCourt asked for an adjournment of two weeks in order to have the accused appear in person where attitude to the offence will be taken.

The prosecutor told the court that “the directing officer is to speak to the injured party with regards to representations that have been made”.

On looking at the the charge, District Judge Eamon King, said: “That’s an interesting one, isn’t it – breach of a lifetime ban on reporting?”

The case was adjourned with Shortt due back before Newry Magistrates’ Court on December 9.
