Watch: Vandals caught on CCTV damaging flagpole at south Armagh memorial

Vandalism that has no place in our community

On Friday 22nd June at 11.50pm the two men were caught on camera vandalising the flag pole at the monument at Fords Cross, Silverbridge. They were also responsible for vandalising a flag pole at Cloghue and the monument to the Hunger Strikers at Carnagat on the same night. If anybody recognises them, please notify the PSNI or any political/community activists in your area. This was unprovoked and we should not allow a small criminal element destroy community relations.

This is the moment two vandals were caught damaging a flagpole erected at a south Armagh memorial late last Friday night (June 22).

The incident happened just before midnight in Fords Cross, Silverbridge.

It was on the same night crosses at the were daubed in graffiti – an attack described as “outreageous” by Sinn Fein MLA Megan Fearon.

Camlough Community Association posted this video to their Facebook asking for help in identifying the culprits.

The post read: “On Friday 22nd June at 11.50pm the two men were caught on camera vandalising the flag pole at the monument at Fords Cross, Silverbridge.

“They were also responsible for vandalising a flag pole at Cloghue and the monument to the Hunger Strikers at Carnagat on the same night.

“If anybody recognises them, please notify the PSNI or any political/community activists in your area.

“This was unprovoked and we should not allow a small criminal element destroy community relations.”

A series of “co-ordinated” attacks took place on memorials in south Armagh that night.

Of these, Ms Fearon MLA, said: “These outrageous attacks are viewed by most as clearly coordinated deliberate attempts to insult and antagonise.

“All memorials should be treated with dignity and respect and should not be targeted in this way.

“I have no doubt that the republican community here will rise to the occasion and restore the monuments to their original states.

“I would call on people not to be lured into a situation where they feel they must respond to this act, that is not to the benefit of republicans.”
