South Armagh GAA community raises £11,200 for Air Ambulance following on-field emergency

'When the HEMS team was called to the pitch that day, it brought home to us all just how vital Air Ambulance NI is'

The generosity and spirit of the local GAA community have shone through with an incredible £11,200 raised in support of Air Ambulance Northern Ireland over the past four weeks.

The fundraising was prompted after the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) team was called to attend a player during the original match between Mullaghbawn CLG and St Patrick’s GAA Cullyhanna Naomh Pádraig.

In recognition of the life-saving work of Air Ambulance NI, both clubs and the wider community rallied together to show their support.

Funds were raised through a bucket collection at the replay match, as well as through an online campaign. In addition, the Armagh GAA County Board made a generous contribution from additional ticket sales purchased for the replay.

Speaking on behalf of Air Ambulance NI, Bébhionn Hardy, Community Fundraising Coordinator said: “We are deeply grateful to Mullaghbawn CLG, St Patrick’s GAA Cullyhanna, Armagh GAA County Board, and the entire community for this remarkable fundraising effort.

“Every donation helps keep our helicopter flying and our medical team ready to respond to the next critically ill or injured patient. This generosity will make a real difference.”

Anne McNeill, also commented: “When the HEMS team was called to the pitch that day, it brought home to us all just how vital Air Ambulance NI is. As a GAA community, we wanted to show our thanks and support. The response from our clubs and supporters has been outstanding, and we are proud to present this donation to such a life-saving service.”

Air Ambulance NI is a local charity that provides the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service for Northern Ireland, working in partnership with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

The service operates 365 days a year and can reach anywhere in Northern Ireland in approximately 25 minutes, bringing advanced medical care directly to the scene of serious incidents.

On average the medical team are called upon twice every day, whether that is as a result of a serious road traffic collision, farm or workplace accident, sport and leisure incident or a serious medical emergency.

As a local charity, Air Ambulance NI aspires to raise £3 million each year to maintain and sustain this service so public donations are crucial.
