A new mini supermarket and large fuel forecourt in a south Armagh village has been given the green light – despite Council planners recommending its refusal.
The application, by Carraigh Dua Services Limited for the major new development in Belleeks, has been approved by Newry, Mourne and Down Council planning committee, against the advice of planners.
The mini supermarket is expected to be a Spar store in the name of ‘Mackins’.
Some of the reasons cited by planners include: no overriding reasons why the development must be located in this countryside location and not within a settlement; that it would result in inappropriate urban sprawl; the design of the building is inappropriate for the site and its locality; and the proposal does not meet the exceptional retail facilities which may be acceptable in the countryside, and it is considered the proposal will adversely affect the vitality and viability of Belleek.
However, Sinn Féin Councillor Oonagh Magennis described the approval as “a very welcome development for this area of south Armagh”.
She said: “It will not only provide much needed services to this community, but it will also create local employment and add to the community spirit and cohesion of this area.
“Prior to its closure The Tully family provided shopping amenities to the Belleek and wider area.
“We wish proprietor of this new mini supermarket and petrol station development, Jason Mackin, the very best in this venture.”
She added: “Sinn Féin is dedicated to advocating for rural communities and ensuring their sustainability and growth.
“Together, we are committed to championing the interests of our constituents and fostering sustainable development in our rural landscapes.”
