Road remains closed after school bus crash as MLA speaks of ‘relief’ no children seriously hurt

'I want to thank the emergency services for their swift and professional response and ask that the privacy of those affected be respected'

Ambulance Police Day

A school bus which toppled after a crash in south Armagh had been carrying pupils from St Paul’s High School in Bessbrook.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service had despatched five ambulances and other paramedics to the scene, to tend to those who had been caught up in the incident. Northern Ireland Fire Service personnel and PSNI are also on scene, with the road closed.

According to one local MLA, however, there have been no reports of serious injuries.

The collision happened on the Tullyah Road area of Belleeks, between Newtownhamilton and Camlough, shortly before 4pm.

There were reports of up to 40 children on board at the time.

Fortunately, school principal Daithi Murray has confirmed all had been able to exit the vehicle safety, and told UTV that all had since been collected by their parents.

While the road remained closed, a PSNI spokesperson urged motorists: “Please avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

“An update will be issued in due course.”

Newry and Armagh MLA Aoife Finnegan, meanwhile, said her thoughts were with all involved.

She added: “I understand an incident occurred earlier today involving a school bus travelling from St Paul’s on the Tullyah Road in the Whitecross area.

“I am relieved to hear that no children were hurt.

“I want to thank the emergency services for their swift and professional response and ask that the privacy of those affected be respected.”
