Newtownhamilton Dundalk Street with GLAA officer

A number of addresses in Newtownhamilton were searched this week as part of an operation into gangmaster activity in the town.

The Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) searched a number of premises in the Dundalk Street, Cookes Crescent and Armagh Road areas on Tuesday morning.

A large number of police and authority staff descended on the town, entering a number of properties, as part of the operation.

A spokesperson for the GLAA said: “We were assisted by the PSNI to execute a warrant at an address in Newtownhamilton on Tuesday (December 10). A number of other addresses were also visited regarding possible offences under the Gangmasters Licencing Act 2004.”

The GLAA did not confirm whether any arrests have been made but did clarify that the investigation remains open and ongoing at this time.

The GLAA is a Non Departmental Public Body set up to protect vulnerable and exploited workers.

According to their website, they work through the intelligence they receive from their inspections, the public, industry and other government departments. They investigate reports of worker exploitation and illegal activity such as human trafficking, forced labour and illegal labour provision, as well as offences under the National Minimum Wage and Employment Agencies Acts.
