Councillors Paul Berry and Lavelle McIlwrath represented Armagh City and District Council at a number of very poignant remembrance services in Northern France on the 1st July commemorating the 98th anniversary of what is known as the battle of the Somme.
Speaking after the remembrance services both Councillors indicated that it was very humbling experience to stand at the very site where thousands of Ulstermen gave their lives in the cause of freedom and for the very liberties that we all enjoy and take for granted today. We were able to attend special remembrance services at Thiepval and the Ulster Tower where the huge sacrifice of the 36th Ulster division was remembered and at Guillemont where the great sacrifice of the 16th Irish Division was also remembered.
Councillors McIlwrath and Berry indicated that this was a very special visit to the Battlefields of the Somme and Northern Belgium and one which will remain long in the memory.
