A memorial in Newry was painted over in what has been described as a “deliberate attempt to heighten tensions”.

MP Mickey Brady has said that the painting of UVF on a memorial in the city was a worrying development and was viewed by many as a deliberate attempt to heighten tensions.

“The daubing of the letters UVF on this memorial is an act of vandalism and sectarian hate.

“Many including myself see it as a very deliberate attempt to heighten tensions in the area in the build up to the 12th Orange Celebrations.

“I, along with my party, have always encouraged mutual tolerance and respect. This criminal act flies in the face of those values and I expect all right minded public representatives to condemn it.

“No one should react to this inflammatory attack and it should be treated with the contempt it deserves.”
