Just two weeks after the opening of the new Newry Leisure Centre, and Armagh I can reveal that the second phase of the multi-million pound development is about to be formally approved by the new super-council.
The new centre was opened with a very well attended family fun weekend at the end of April and created another 14 jobs for the area.
Phase one of the new leisure centre introduced a wide range of supervised swimming activities and water features, which includes an eight lane main swimming pool, teaching pool, leisure pool with separate toddler area and exciting water features.
There is also an exciting spiral flume slide providing loads of fun and an exclusive Health Suite including Spa Pool, Steam Room, Sauna, Experience Shower and Heated loungers.
The recently opened development also included a viewing gallery with Olympic standard seating.
Now phase two of the development will be recommended for approval when the application goes before the new Newry, Mourne and Down Council next Wednesday night.
It had been submitted by the former Newry and Mourne District Council and covers a site at Rooney’s Meadow and Clanrye Avenue, incorporating Frank Curran Park and Jennings Park.
This phase will see the development of new sports halls, fitness suites, café and multi-purpose rooms, together with associated changing facilities and car parking.
A new access will also be created off Cecil Street.
The item had been scheduled as a reserved matter and is now being recommended for approval.
