Water nightmare! Plans afoot to end long-standing flooding issue off main Marlacoo Road

Marlacoo flooding

Persistent flooding on a Richhill road may soon be a thing of the past following discussions to find a long-term solution.

Cusher DUP Councillor Gareth Wilson met with the Rivers Agency to talk through the persistent issue plaguing a slip road off the main Marlacoo Road.

A senior Rivers Agency area engineer explained that investigatory work was being carried out and that there has been an assurance from the land owner that drainage ditch clearing would take place.

This, Alderman Wilson said, will hopefully eliminating persistent flooding and allow more permanent road repairs to be carried out.

“I met with Rivers Agency in recent weeks at the request of local residents to try and find a solution to this issue and I was grateful for the time taken by the local Rivers Agency area engineer to investigate the issue and liaise with local land owners,” said Alderman Wilson.

“It is good that a plan to have drains cleared has been agreed which will hopefully lead to an elimination of the problem of standing flood water and an erosion of this narrow road surface.”

The councillor acknowledged potential delays due to seasonal environmental factors but urged for swift action to be taken.

“This will hopefully take place in the not too distant future, conscious of nesting bird time and other considerations, however I would be grateful, as would road users, if this work could be done as soon as possible.”

Alderman Wilson confirmed that the Department for Infrastructure (DFI) plans to follow up the drainage works with permanent road repairs.

“Following this necessary work I understand that DFI will then put in place more permanent repairs along this route that has suffered a lot of damage due to heavier vehicles and the standing water.

“Indeed it is vital that emergency repairs are carried out immediately such is the level of disrepair on the route over a short distance to enable residents to have a respectable surface on which to drive. I will continue my lobbying on this important issue.”
