A woman has been arrested following a dramatic cross‑county police pursuit on Thursday evening, which lasted more than 15 minutes and spanned several towns across the borough.
The incident began in Portadown before the vehicle travelled at high speed through Lurgan, Waringstown and Banbridge, with the driver allegedly reaching more than double the legal speed limit as she attempted to evade police.
During the pursuit, objects were reportedly thrown from the car towards pursuing officers.
Road Policing Unit officers based at Mahon Road, working alongside local district officers, moved to bring the incident to a safe conclusion on the A1 dual carriageway near Banbridge.
Specially trained pursuit officers used tactical contact to stop the vehicle, in order to prevent the driver from entering the wrong carriageway and driving against oncoming traffic.
Police have confirmed that the female driver was arrested on suspicion of a number of driving offences, including drink-driving. It is understood the car had been taken from the Newry area earlier in the evening without the owner’s permission.
A police spokesperson said officers would continue to robustly target dangerous driving: “We will continue to crack down on people like this – they put everyone on our roads at risk.”
