A judge said given that a Berlingo van clocked at 104mph was “probably shaking”, at least a driver had not claimed he was unaware his speed had “crept up”.
District Judge Michael Ranaghan was speaking at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court.
Gary Clarke (43), with an address listed as in Belfast, was detected in a 70mph zone – the M1 near Portadown – on Wednesday April 9 last year.
The court was told the defendant had been travelling from Keady and it had been an “unacceptable” speed.
A defence barrister said the road was “dry” and “there were no other road users inconvenienced at the time”.
He said the defendant required his licence in connection with family members and also to assist with care of a relative.
Rather than losing his licence “and other people suffering,” the barrister said his client would instead be able to pay a “heavy fine”.
Judge Ranaghan said: “He has asked the court to be lenient around the points but the only way I can do that is with a significant and swingeing fine to mark the danger Mr Clarke represents”.
The defendant was given six penalty points and was fined £450.
