Twenty-year-old caught with cannabis fined £500 for first offence on his record

A  man has been fined £500 for possession of cannabis in what is the first entry on his record.

Court heard the 20-year-old handed police the drugs after being informed that he would be searched.

Levi Soares, of Coronation Street, Portadown pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a Class B drug at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Court heard that on November 23, police on patrol of Thomas Street, Portadown, spoke to the defendant who was the driver of a Honda Civic.

Officers detected a smell of cannabis coming from the car and told Soares that he was to be searched.

Upon hearing this the defendant handed over a grinder containing herbal cannabis and a bag of cannabis resin.

Defence solicitor Siun Downey stated: “This is a young man with no previous record, he works full time in a car wash and has come to court with his girlfriend.”

Soares was ordered to pay a fine of £500, along with the offender’s levy of £15.
