There has been an outpouring of grief, as well as hundreds of heartfelt tributes from across Co. Armagh, following the tragic passing of a young man remembered for his kindness, warmth and “heart of gold”.
Diarmait Patrick McConville, from Derrycarib, Portadown, passed away on Sunday and news of his death has deeply felt across an entire community.
The much-loved son of Aisling and Patrick, Diarmait was a devoted brother to Blathnat and Aoife, and a cherished grandson of Don and Bernadette Clarke, and John and the late Margaret McConville.
Tributes have flooded social media since the news emerged, painting a picture of a hugely popular and much-loved man who left a lasting impression on many.
St Mary’s YCFC, where Diarmait had previously played at youth level, described the loss as “devastating”.
“As a club we send our deepest condolences to Pat, Aisling and the McConville family on the devastating news of the loss of Diarmait, a former Youth Team Player at St Mary’s,” a statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Diarmait’s family and friends at this difficult time. RIP Diarmait.”
Many spoke of his character and the impact he had on those around him. One tribute described him as “a gentleman with a heart of gold who will be missed by many”, while another simply conveyed their shock at the news: “No words 💔”.
Friends recalled growing up alongside Diarmait, with one saying: “Rest in peace Dermy. You had an absolute heart of gold no matter how long it had been since we’d seen each other. It was a pleasure being able to grow up with you.”
Former teachers also shared their memories, including one from St John the Baptist Primary School who remembered Diarmait as “a well-mannered, happy and bright boy” during his P6 year, offering condolences to his parents, sisters and wider family circle.
Others echoed the same sentiment, describing him as “an absolute gentleman” and “one of the best”; it was clear many enjoyed the privilege to having known him in one capacity or another.
“Sleep tight in the arms of the angels,” one tribute read. “Your memory will live on in everyone’s hearts.”
Diarmait’s Requiem Mass will take place on Thursday at 11am in the Church of St John the Baptist, Drumcree, with interment afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. The Mass can be viewed online via the Drumcree Parish livestream. The family home is strictly private.
He will be deeply regretted by his heartbroken parents, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles and the wider family circle, as the community continues to rally around them in their time of profound loss.
