A senior judge has been appointed to lead an independent review into how the Parades Commission makes its decisions, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has announced.
Sir John O’Hara KC will head the review into the Commission’s decision‑making processes and organisational governance following a recent court judgment around the controversial Drumcree parade which raised serious questions over how it operates.
Confirming the appointment, Secretary of State Sir Chris Bryant said the Commission carried out a “vital role in sensitive and often challenging circumstances”, and that public confidence had to be protected.
“Following the recent court judgment, it is paramount that we restore and maintain the highest possible levels of confidence in how decisions are reached,” he said.
“I have been steadfast in my commitment that this review must be entirely independent, thoroughly credible, and led by a figure of high standing and proven expertise.
“I am delighted that Sir John O’Hara KC has agreed to undertake this important work. His considerable standing, vast legal experience, and independence make him uniquely qualified to provide the assurance, scrutiny, and actionable recommendations needed.
“His appointment underscores the government’s commitment to an objective, authoritative, and rigorous examination of the Commission’s governance and decision‑making procedures.”
The Parades Commission, which rules on contentious marches and parades across Northern Ireland, has long been at the centre of disputes involving communities, political representatives and parade organisers.
The forthcoming review is expected to examine how the body reaches its determinations, the robustness of its internal structures and governance, and whether any reforms are needed to strengthen transparency and accountability.
