Tributes paid to father-of-three ‘who gave so much to his community’ following tragic farm death

Richard Ruddell

Tributes have been paid to a father-of-three tragically killed in a farm accident in Lurgan on Friday evening.

Richard Ruddell, a well-known farmer and businessman in the area, was the beloved husband of Caroline and a devoted father to Sarah, Samuel and Caleb.

He was also the brother of George, Clifford and Jonathan.

The 55-year-old died as a result of an accident on the Ballynery North Road, close to the family home on Kilvergan Road in Lurgan.

Richard’s passing has shocked an entire community, both near and far, such was the esteem in which he was regarded.

Many tributes have been paid to “a great man” whose loss has devastated many who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A spokesperson for Portadown Rugby Club said : “It is with huge sadness we learn of the sudden and tragic passing of Richard Ruddell.

“Richard was a familiar face around Chambers Park. Behind the wheel of his tractor, working on the pitches or cheering on his two sons. Richard was never too far away!

“The Ruddells have given so much to the Portadown community and to Portadown RFC. They are as a family, amongst the kindest and most selfless people.

“Sam, plays for our U18s and Caleb for the College. Sarah has organised events at our club, indeed the tractor run in the coming days was organised by Richard and Sarah.

“Please keep Caroline, Sarah, Sam and Caleb in your prayers. They have lost a much loved husband and father.
We have lost a much loved and respected friend.”

Loughshore Rural Countryside added: “A whole community is in total shock today as news filters through with the untimely death of local farmer, Richard Ruddell (RIP).

“Many will know of Richard through his farm shops and many in the local community will know him personally as a great friend and dedicated farmer who taddled the roads day and night on his tractor doing his regular farming duties.

“Looking through my own eyes on a personal level I seen Richard as a friend and hard working committed farmer with a great family unit behind him supporting each other day and daily in all weathers and just making lite of it.

“Also many young lads and girls will knew off Richard during harvest time gathering spuds for pocket money a tradition set by Ruddell family down through the years.

“We as the local community want to send our condolences to the immediate Ruddell family at this difficult time. Rip Richard.”

Glenavon FC commented: “The club are saddened to hear of the passing Richard Ruddell, brother of former director, George. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the entire Ruddell family circle at this sad time.”
