Primary school children spring clean shows extent of litter blight in grass verges

Lord Mayor praises Derryhale PS children for hard work

School children really could teach us all a lesson!

The picture shows the fruits of the labours of the children of Derryhale Primary School.

The young people gathered bags full of litter which had been thrown along grass verges in the area.

It was part of a spring clean exercise and a way of helping to teach them of the need to be environmentally friendly.

That message of course is not lost on the young people – it’s the adults which may have the problem.

The amount of rubbish simply being thrown from passing vehicles to gather in road verges is scandalous.

Lord Mayor Gareth Wilson recently took part in a litter pick around the Tandragee area and saw for himself the hard work which council staff put in in cleaning the mess which is getting out of hand.

He praised the children of Derryhale Primary School for their efforts and thanked council staff for coming out and providing some sweeping, litter picks, bags and for taking away the rubbish.

“The kids really understand the importance of not throwing down litter and were so enthusiastic about the clean up,” he said. “Pity all the adults who threw the litter down in the first place can’t learn this lesson!”
