A Portadown primary school will be welcoming a very special new member of staff to their faculty for the start of the new school term!
And this is a staff member with a difference. On, four fluffy paws, Ms Tally will be aiming to make every pupil at Edenderry Primary feel more emotionally supported in the school environment in her role as their dedicated therapy dog.
Said the school: “Over a considerable period of time, we have carefully researched the many benefits of introducing a therapy dog into school and are excited to begin this journey with our pupils.
“Tally will play an important role in supporting the wellbeing of children across our entire school community, helping us to continue providing a nurturing, inclusive and caring environment where every child can thrive.”
Research and experience from schools across the UK have shown that therapy dogs can help to:
- Reduce anxiety and stress
- Support emotional regulation
- Increase confidence and self-esteem
- Encourage communication and social interaction
- Promote positive behaviour
- Improve engagement with learning
- Provide comfort and reassurance during difficult situations
- Create a calm, positive and supportive school environment
Miss McClelland will be Tally’s primary carer and handler in school. Over the coming school year, she will undertake specialist training through Assistance Dogs NI to ensure that Tally receives the highest standard of care and is able to work safely and effectively with our pupils.
Said Edenderry PS: “We are extremely grateful to Miss McClelland for taking on this important role and for her commitment to the programme.
“Introducing and maintaining a professionally trained therapy dog is a significant investment. The costs associated with training, healthcare, insurance, equipment and ongoing support are substantial.
“As a school, we are committed to making this initiative a success, but we would also love to hear from any local businesses that may be interested in partnering with us to help support Tally’s journey.”
In return for their support, we would be delighted to recognise our partners through school communications and community engagement activities.
The school would also be pleased to arrange visits from Tally to supporting businesses, providing opportunities to celebrate the positive difference they are making for the children of Edenderry Primary School and the wider community.
