Portadown author describes ‘surreal’ moment as King and Queen unveil her portrait at Belfast gallery launch

"Moments like these remind me how powerful storytelling, art, and community truly are."

A Portadown author and screenwriter experienced a moment of complete surrealism at watching their Majesties, King Charles III and Queen Camilla unveil her portrait during their visit to officially open a Belfast Art Gallery.

Belles of Belfast author, Lucy McMullan had had her portrait exhibited by “brilliant” gallery owner and famed Belfast publican, Willie Jack at the opening of his new art exhibition space, Sea Holly Gallery.

The work was painted by esteemed Belfast artist Ciaran Gallagher who has long displayed many of his satirical paintings on the walls of Willie’s famous Duke of York Pub.

The new gallery on Hill Street, in the Cathedral Quarter of the capital city, opened with an exhibition of Ciaran’s work showcasing a series of portraits of local community members during the Royal visit.

Among them was 26-year-old Lucy McMullan’s portrait which she stood beside to greet their Majesties.

Of the experience the young author said: “I’m incredibly grateful to have had my portrait painted for this fantastic gallery, created by the brilliant Willie Jack.

“When I posed for it last summer, I never imagined that King Charles III and Queen Camilla would be the ones unveiling it.

“It was a surreal and unforgettable moment, made even more special by the incredible talent of Ciaran, whose artistry brought these portraits to life.”

Lucy was even able to “chat” with Queen Camilla about her novel in what she describes as an “honour” – given The Queen’s own love for literature expressed through The Queen’s Reading Room book club and podcast.

Said Lucy: “Moments like these remind me how powerful storytelling, art, and community truly are.”
