Police warn Garvaghy Road blockade ‘still illegal’ after thousands attend solidarity rally

Police have warned that anyone blocking the Garvaghy Road will be treated as taking part in an “unnotified and therefore illegal protest” following a major solidarity rally in Portadown earlier today (Saturday).

Assistant Chief Constable Anthony McNally said officers were aware of “a large gathering of people on the Garvaghy Road” and confirmed it had caused “significant traffic disruption”.

While congestion was easing by Saturday evening, motorists were still being advised to avoid the area if possible.

ACC McNally stressed that, despite the scale of the demonstration, the legal position around any attempt to block the route had not changed.

“Importantly, we also want to remind people that anyone blocking the Garvaghy Road will still be treated as participating in an unnotified and therefore illegal protest,” he said.

“Police evidence gathering remains ongoing. Anyone found to have broken the law will face criminal justice consequences.”

The statement comes amid heightened tensions in Portadown over the long‑running Drumcree parade dispute, with a major policing operation already in place around the town this weekend.
