Man faces deportation after suspected drink driving incident in Portadown

Range Rover police

A suspected drunk driver is set to be deported after being stopped by police in Portadown on Sunday morning.

Road Policing officers from Mahon Road station spotted a white Range Rover Evoque veering in its lane ahead of them.

They stopped the vehicle and the driver failed a preliminary breath test and was subsequently arrested for driving with excess alcohol, driving without a licence or insurance and taking the vehicle without the owners authority.

In custody, the driver provided an evidential reading which was under the legal limit but has since been charged with the other offences.

The PSNI said: “Further enquires with Immigration Enforcement confirmed that the driver had provided false details.

“When the correct details were discovered it revealed the male had entered the UK illegally and now faces deportation. He remains in police custody.

“A short time later, another Mahon Road patrol responded to a report from the public about a suspected drink driver. Officers located the Dacia a short time later after it was involved in a collision with another vehicle.

“The driver was arrested after providing a roadside breath sample of 129, the limit being 35.

“He remains in police custody after providing an evidential reading which was just under 3 and a half times the legal limit and will be charged with driving with excess alcohol.”
