Man charged after elderly woman allegedly hit with crowbar in Co Armagh church

He is due to appear at Lisburn Magistrates’ Court on Monday

A man has been charged following an incident which saw an elderly woman hit with a crow bar in a county Armagh church on Saturday afternoon.

Police have charged a 45-year-old man with attempted theft; robbery; going equipped for theft; and possession of an offensive weapon with intent. 

He is due to appear at Lisburn Magistrates’ Court tomorrowMonday, July 3.

It is alleged that a lady in her 70s entered the church in the William Street area of Portadown and disturbed a man trying to prise open a donation box open with a crowbar.

It is further alleged that the man demanded money from her but after refusing, the lady was hit her with the crowbar before handing over a sum of money.

The lady was left shaken and has some bruising to her left shoulder.

As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the PPS.
