A man has been arrested in Portadown for begging.

Police say they arrested the man on Tuesday afternoon at Meadow Lane in the town on suspicion of begging.

“We received a report that a male was begging and producing a card that he could not speak English and needed money for feeding his baby,” a PSNI spokesperson said.

“This male has now been charged with the offence of begging under the Vagrancy Act 1824 and will be attending court in the near future.”

“Report this activity to Police on 101.”

There have been reports of similar approaches to shoppers in Armagh, however, it remains unclear if these are related at this time.
