A man allegedly assaulted a woman with a hammer, guitar and a plank of wood and sprayed Lynx deodorant in her eyes.

Conor James McConville, of Portmore Street in Portadown, is accused of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a plank of wood, guitar and hammer as offensive weapons on August 27 last year.

On Friday, the 32-year-old appeared at Craigavon Magistraes’ Court via video link from prison where he has been on remand.

During a bail application, a police officer said the PSNI responded to a report of a disturbance at 1.30pm on August 27 at the defendant’s address.

Shouting could be heard and the defendant appeared at a window and had blood dripping from his face and appeared to be “under the influence”.

Smashing could be heard and there was shouting between a female and the defendant.

Police entered and saw the defendant lying on a living room floor. He had cuts to his head, eyebrow and hand.

The woman was lying face down on an overturned table. A hammer and a “pool of blood” was observed next to her head.

She sat up and police noted a substantial amount of blood around her face, hands, arms and legs. She had a cut on the forehead.

She had bruises on her arms and legs and she complained about having being struck on the back.

The defendant told police the woman hit him on the head with an empty bottle following an argument.

The woman told police the defendant had awoke feeling ill and had gone to a pharmacy to get a subutex prescription but was denied it.

She said the defendant returned home with a bottle of alcohol and she had drank part of it.

The woman told police that when an argument began she was punched by the defendant and struck by a plank of wood, a hammer and guitar and “he was also alleged to have sprayed sprayed Lynx deodorant in her eyes,” said the officer.

The defendant had 157 previous convictions.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan said the defendant had an “appalling” record and had breached bail before.

Refusing bail, the judge said he had “lost faith” in the defendant.

The case was adjourned to April 25.
