A man who slammed a door onto his mother’s hand as she tried to stop him arguing with his partner has pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Carlos Auberto Loureiro, of Charles Street in Portadown, committed the offence on May 20 this year.
The 48-year-old’s mother had gone to hospital for treatment to a hand injury which needed five stitches.
A prosecutor said the defendant’s mum had put her hand up as a gesture for the argument to stop and Loureiro “slammed the door causing her hand to be caught in it and that left her with a deep laceration”.
The defendant appeared at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday via video link from custody.
A defence lawyer said the defendant had been “reckless as to what would happen” when he closed the door.
The defendant, who had a record, had been in custody since the time of the incident.
District Judge Michael Ranaghan said the door slam might well have been reckless, but no doubt would have been extremely painful and distressing for the defendant’s mother.
The defendant was given a five months jail term.
