‘I won’t tolerate it’: MP takes aim at ‘keyboard warriors’ over latest social media abuse

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has again called out “keyboard warriors” after being subjected to disgusting online abuse.

Posts on social media this week again shone a light on an issue which the DUP representative has had to face day and daily.

And while she says she expects that some may not agree with her politics, she has again questioned those who attack her based on her appearance.

In a strongly-worded plea for an end to this type of activity, she said: “I see the online keyboard warriors have been dusting off their dictionaries and thesauruses to abuse me online, based solely on how they think I look.

“Now, I am no shrinking violet and it takes a lot to put me down. But you can’t just post whatever you want on social media and expect there to be no consequences. I won’t accept it. You don’t have to agree with me, that’s fine. But abuse is not okay. Every single day I see the comments, and on almost every post there is something nasty or hurtful.

“Take a look at yourselves. Ask what example you are setting for your family and for your children when you abuse women online simply because of how they look.

“My family see it, and they should not have to. That’s why I’m saying this clearly now. If you post abuse, you will be held accountable. I won’t tolerate it.

“I will continue to do my job representing Upper Bann, standing up for those who elect me, and helping people across the community who come to me for support or advice. It is a privilege to serve, and I take that responsibility seriously.

“Thank you to those who have reached out and encouraged me not to be deterred and to Redhouse Holsteins / Redhouse Genetic Solutions for shining a light on this ongoing issue. I normally just let it slide.”
