‘Colourful’ funeral to be held for Portadown’s ‘real life superhero’

'It has been a privilege to care for Ben and to get to know you all over the years'

A “colourful” funeral has been planned for a Portadown “real life superhero” who called Craigavon’s Blossom Ward his “second home”.

Warrior, Ben Hawkins tragically passed away at Blossom Children’s Ward today (November 13) surrounded by his loving family.

Sharing their condolences with the family, a staff member of the Blossom Ward said: “Gordon and Kerry my heart is broken for you all.

“It has been a privilege to care for Ben and to get to know you all over the years.

“Everyone in Blossom has their own fond memories of wee Ben. Praying for you all as a family at this tragic time. Xx”

Those who knew him or cared for him have added to this sentiment, saying it was a “privilege” and a “pleasure” to have been in his life.

Another added: “Gordon, Kerry, Ashley and Matthew I was so very saddened to see this news earlier today.

“Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. It has been an absolute privilege to get to know Ben and yourselves and to look after him and you all over the years.

“I still remember the little boy he was just as we were getting to know him with blond hair and wee round glasses from all those years ago. God Bless you . Heartbroken for you all.”

A death notice described Ben as the beloved son of Gordon and Kerry and much loved brother of Ashley and Matthew.

A funeral service will be held in The Old Meeting House, Portadown on Saturday at 2pm followed by a private cremation.

The family have asked that those attending wear colourful, comfy clothes.

Friends welcome at the family home on Friday from 2pm to 9pm.

Donations are also being gratefully received for The Blossom Ward, Craigavon Area Hospital.
