Asda Portadown colleague praised for quick thinking after recognising customer diabetes alert

An Asda Portadown colleague has been recognised after stepping in to support a customer when their diabetes alert went off.

Front-end retail assistant Charlotte Gillen-Murphy, who has worked at the store for seven years, was gathering baskets near the checkouts when she heard an alarm nearby – a sound she recognised as a diabetes monitor alert.

“It’s a sound I’m familiar with through a family member,” she said.

Charlotte checked in with the customer, who reassured her he was fine. Aware of the potential risks, she caught up with him again before he left the store, and suggested a bottle of Lucozade, just in case.

Grateful for Charlotte’s intervention, the customer said he was going to his car to take his insulin – and soon returned to thank the team, personally highlighting Charlotte’s kindness, and attentiveness.

Charlotte said: “I just did what anyone would do. I’m glad I could help, even in a small way – it’s moments like these can make a big difference to someone else’s day.”

Lorraine Drennan, General Store Manager, Asda Portadown added: “This is a great example of the care and awareness for our customers we strive for every day at Asda Portadown. Charlotte noticed something wasn’t quite right and took the time to check in and support the customer in a calm and respectful way. Well done, Charlotte!”
