Annaghmore Men’s Shed delighted to recover tools believed to have been stolen

'When the guys turned up [on Friday morning] this was here. So maybe someone did the right thing and brought them back!'

A fledgling County Armagh Men’s Shed preparing to enter into a new, exciting chapter suffered a shocking set-back after their new shed was broken into and several personal tools stolen…

Miraculously, however, the tools were recovered in a black bin bag on Friday morning!

Annaghmore Men’s Shed (AMS) – now in its third year – has had an incredibly successful start to life… and while the team are “disappointed” by the disappearance of their tools several days ago they are delighted to have them back!

The community project are in the process of preparing to relocate from their first premises on the Clontyclew Road to a new shed on the Tartaraghan Road in September, and the lead up has been well documented and celebrated by all involved and by those outside looking in.

In the last two years the collective have reclaimed, repurposed and recycled 10,000 kilos of pallet timber creating items “that will last for many years”.

They have built lasting friendships, found new meaning in life, have discovered new skills, opportunities and purpose.

The recovered tools

So when they discovered that their space had been entered and personal tools taken, they were understandably devastated.

Said a spokesperson for Annaghmore Men’s Shed at the time of the incident: “We’re heartbroken to share that our new shed has been broken into.

“Some personal tools belonging to our members were taken. These did not belong to AMS, but items that individuals brought in themselves to help get the space up and running, but that we will now have to replace.

“This is a real blow to our AMS community. We and others have worked so hard to create a safe, welcoming place where people can come together, share skills, and support one another. To have that space violated is incredibly upsetting, but it won’t stop us.”

The items believed to have been taken included a DeWalt multi-tool with a larger than usual battery, marked with the initials “EP”, a DeWalt battery charger and a DeWalt battery.

Speaking to Armagh I, the Men’s Shed provided an update that the tools had been recovered!

They said: “When the guys turned up this morning this was here. So maybe someone did the right thing and brought them back!

“We are so, so, so pleased!”

The team will now continue to prepare their new home for official opening in September with ample, much appreciated help from the community.

Added AMS: “Thanks to everyone who has helped us, both members and non-members. We really could not do this without you and it truly means so much to so many!

“We are now on the hunt for a wood burning stove for our new shed.

“If anyone is getting rid or selling one in reasonable condition please think of us. Thanks a million.”
