Police issue 43 fixed penalty notices in one week

During the first week of a focused road safety operation across E District (Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon and Newry and Mourne) police have issued 43 fixed penalty notices.

With two dedicated teams providing visibile road safety patrols across roads in the District, 25 motorists have received advice and warnings, seven have been reported to the PPS and one man was arrested and charged for driving without due care and attention and driving with excess speed.

Sergeant Mickey Gilmore said: “We have conducted operations across a wide spread of roads in E District and it is disappointing to see that motorists are still taking risks with their own safety and that of other road users.

“We have issued fixed penalty notices for excess speed, using a mobile phone while driving, breaching traffic lights and, worryingly, for carrying an unrestrained child. We work hard to educate road users about safety and laws around driving but the message still does not seen to be getting through.

“We will contiune our road safety campaign over the next two weeks and I would ask all motorists to slow down, wear your seatbelt, refrain from using your mobile phone while driving and never, ever drink and drive.”
