Upgrade works on Newtownhamilton PSNI station are due to start on Monday, police have confirmed.

Proposed as part of the South Armagh Policing Review, this phase will see work beginning on the station perimeter to “upgrade and modernise” the appearance of the existing fence on The Square and Shamble Lane, as well as the realignment of Newry Road, in conjunction with the Department for Infrastructure.

Upon completion of the work, the road outside the station will cease to be a one-way system and will be returned to two-way traffic.

It is anticipated that the work may take a number of months to complete and will cause some local disruption for traffic.

Said a PSNI spokesperson: “This is a positive development for the community as it will mean improved traffic flow through the town and will seek to provide a modern fit-for-purpose police estate for the future. We thank the public in advance of any disruption while these works are ongoing.

“We hope that these works, along with the significant progress already made against the delivery of Review’s recommendations, provides reassurance to the local community of our unwavering commitment to delivering a visible, accessible, responsive, community-focused police service to local communities across South Armagh.”
