Arsonists attempted to set fire to an old youth club gymnasium in Newtownhamilton on Monday night.

A number of youths were reported to have broken into the facility on the Dundalk Road around 8.30pm.

Sinn Fein Councillor Barra O’Muiri said there is “huge frustration” in the Newtownhamilton community.

“The Fire Service and PSNI were called and the fire was brought under control; thanks to them for their efforts,” said Councillor O’Muiri.

“I have asked the PSNI to investigate this as breaking and entering and attempted arson.

“The community of Newtown deserves better. The youth club is unsafe at present, and poses real danger to those who would break in to it.”

Councillor O’Muiri thanked Pete Haughey from Newtown Mens’ Shed who raised the alarm just before 9pm.

“God knows what we could be facing if he hadn’t acted so quickly,” he added.

“If anyone has CCTV or dashcam footage of Dundalk St between 8.30 and 9.30 please make it available.”
