Violent altercation involving knife brought Newry traffic to ‘complete standstill’

A violent altercation, allegedly involving four men, brought traffic to “a complete standstill” on the Dublin Road in Newry on Thursday afternoon, with one man reportedly armed with a knife.

The incident happened at around 2.15pm on 7 August.

According to an eyewitness, the men ran across the busy road before stopping midway to continue fighting.

“One was armed with a knife,” the witness said. “Another onlooker got involved to help the man being attacked. The group of three then headed towards the steps of the church car park.

“Traffic heading up the Dublin Road was at a complete standstill and traffic coming into town all saw what was happening. I was totally shocked by what I saw.”

Police have confirmed they received a report of criminal damage and anti-social behaviour in the Dublin Road area at the time of the incident.

A spokesperson said their enquiries “are ongoing”.
