Vandals have targeted the republican plot in St Marys Cemetery in Newry in a graffiti attack.
Spray paint was used to deface the memorial in the Newry graveyard.
Sinn Fein MP Mickey Brady described it as an “outrageous attack”.
“The republican plot in Newry was desecrated last night,” he explained.
“All graveyards are sacred places and should be respected.
“This attack is outrageous and does nothing other than cause distress to families whose loved ones are buried in the plot.”
The MP confirmed that events planned for today will take place
“At present there are efforts being made to clean up as best as possible the memorial. The Easter Rising Commemorations due to take place here today, will go ahead as planned”
Chief Inspector Bernard O’Connor said: “Officers are working to establish a motive for this attack and I am appealing for anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation to contact officers at Ardmore Police Station on 101 quoting reference number 355 of 16/04/17. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
