Two youths on a scrambler attempted to snatch a woman’s handbag from her in Newry earlier today (Thursday).
Sinn Féin councillor Aidan Mathers has condemned an attempted theft which happened on Martin’s Lane.
Councillor Mathers described the incident as “completely unacceptable”, saying the woman was left understandably shaken by the ordeal.
“This was completely unacceptable and I condemn it unreservedly,” he said. “The woman is understandably shaken.
“I have contacted the PSNI and urge anyone with information to come forward. No one should live in fear walking in their own community.
“Sinn Féin will continue to work with the police, community organisations, and residents to tackle youth crime, antisocial behaviour, and all forms of criminal activity, support victims, and keep our streets safe.”
Police have been made aware of the incident and enquiries are ongoing.
