Two local Santander branches set to withdraw from high street next month

Initially, only the Armagh, Portadown and Dungannon branches were earmarked to close locally

Two more Santander branches are set to withdraw from the high street next month as part of the banking giant’s plans to remodel its network.

In January of this year, Armagh I announced that the Banbridge branch on Newry Street was set to be axed as one of 44 branches to close across the UK.

It will officially close its doors to the public on May 19.

So too will Newry’s branch on Hill Street close. Its final day of in-person trading will be May 21.

The Spanish-owned bank announced the move back in March 2025 which across the UK saw more than 750 jobs put at risk.

Initially, only the Armagh, Portadown and Dungannon branches were earmarked to close locally.

However, the Banbridge and Newry branches have since followed hot on their heels leaving only the Lurgan branch – on Market Street – fully operational for the foreseeable future.

In a statement from the high street lender back in 2025, they explained that the bank will be “changing the format of a number of branches to include 18 counter-free and 36 reduced hours branches, alongside its 290 full-service branches and five Work Cafés”.

Helping customers in Newry to prepare for the planned closure, Councillor Joy Ferguson issued some advice, commenting: “When Santander on Newry Street closes in May, the Santander Community Banker will be at Wallace Suites in Church Square every Thursday, starting Thursday 21st May 2026 between 9.30am and 5.00pm.

“Wallace Suites are located at 9&9A Church Square, Banbridge, BT32 4AS. The community banking hub will be on the ground floor to provide continued face-to-face support for customers.”

The councillor referred to some concerns that remained about the lack of cash available on Newry Street.

Of this she added: “Cash is available at Danske and Ulster Bank ATMs on Bridge Street and in Walsh’s Newsagents on Scarva Street during their retail hours.

“Mobile, Online and Telephone Banking is available to manage your money at any time. Current or savings account holders can manage their account at an ATM or a Post Office or by attending the local Banking Hub in Wallace Suites every Thursday.”
