Tributes have been paid to the Co Down schoolgirl who died in a tragic road accident on the Hilltown Road at Newry.
Six-year-old Ella Trainor had been a back seat passenger in a Volkswagen car which was involved in a collision with a Seat car and a tractor pulling a trailer.
Ella passed away a short time after the road traffic collision, which happened at 9.55am, at Daisy Hill Hospital.
The schoolgirl, who had only recently returned to school after the Christmas holidays, was the daughter of Martin and Susan Trainor, from Warrenpoint.
Chairperson of Newry Mourne and Down District Council Michael Ruane has extended his sympathy to the family.
“This is a deeply tragic incident,” he said. “On a personal basis and on behalf of the entire community I want to send heartfelt condolences to Martin, Susan and the entire family circle.”
The Council Chairperson, who is from Warrenpoint, knew the family.
He added: “This devastating news of further loss of life on the roads has cast another dark cloud over our area and community.
“Our support, thoughts and prayers are with this suffering family as they face this nightmare of such a tragic loss.”
Two women, aged 24 and 42, were taken to hospital after the collision for treatment to injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.
Inspector Stephen Humphries is appealing to anyone who was travelling on the Hilltown Road yesterday morning and who witnessed the collision to contact local police in Newry or the Collision Investigation Unit in Sprucefield on the non-emergency number 101.
