The Southern Health and Social Care Trust has received £4.5 million funding from the Department of Health to purchase the site at Abbey Way and associated design to further progress the Newry Community Treatment and Care Centre scheme.
This latest development follows the Trust’s purchase of the Monaghan Row site from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council also confirmed this week.
Welcoming the latest development, Trust Chief Executive Dr Maria O’Kane said: “We are delighted after a number of unavoidable delays to this project, to be able to progress our plans for the Newry Community Treatment and Care Centre.
“Along with the acquisition of the Monaghan Row site, this new state of the art facility will allow us to free up much needed space at Daisy Hill to further expand and develop acute hospital services on site.
“The new centre will bring together a wide range of services which are currently delivered by around 600 staff across 13 sites, into much more modern and suitable accommodation.
“Offering a range of planned outpatient appointments, diagnostics and specialist clinics, the proposed community treatment and care centre underpins our future vision for Newry and Mourne, complementing the high quality acute care provided from Daisy Hill Hospital and improving services for the local population.”
The Trust is now working to develop the detailed Outline Business Case which is the next step in the process to secure the capital funding to construct the facility.
