A £318,000 resurfacing scheme is to upgrade Newry’s A28 Customs Station roundabout and Carnbane Way next month – the second such announcement on roundabouts in the city made today (Friday).
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins says the scheme will commence on Sunday, September 6.
The resurfacing scheme will involve the asphalt resurfacing of the Customs Station Roundabout & side roads adjacent to the roundabout also extending along Carnbane Way for 300 metres towards Fiveways roundabout.
The Infrastructure Minister said: “This is a substantial investment for the Newry area which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those travelling in the Newry area. Work is expected to be substantially completed by Saturday 19 September 2026. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”
To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme it will be necessary to implement over-night road closures from Sunday 6 September to Friday 18 September 2026, 8:00 pm to 6:00am each night.

Diversion 1: A1 Carnbane Way, A1 Belfast Road, A1 Newry by-pass, A1 Newry by-pass on-slip (south bound), A1 Newry by-pass dual carriageway (south bound), A1 Newry by-pass off slip road (south bound), A25 Camlough Road, A1 Craigmore Way, A1 Armagh Road, A1 Newry by-pass on-slip road (north bound), A1 Newry by-pass dual carriageway (north bound), A1 Newry by-pass off slip road (north bound), A1 Newry by-pass slip road (north bound)
Diversion 2: U5160 Shepherds Way, A27 Tandragee Road.
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience however, while steps have been taken to accommodate local access road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works will be substantially complete by Saturday 19 September 2026, however the Department will keep the public informed of any change.
