Recovery efforts stood down as body found in search for missing Newry man

Shane McEvoy

Gardaí searching for missing Newry man, Shane McEvoy have confirmed the recovery of a body.

The 38-year-old was originally reported as last being seen around 5pm on Friday, March 13, in the Old Dublin Road area of the city.

Police later said they believed Shane was last seen later that evening, between approximately 9pm and 9.30pm, in the vicinity of Thompson’s yard, close to the Circle K service station near junction 20 in the Republic of Ireland.

At that time he was believed to be wearing a dark-coloured top and dark jeans. He also appeared to be walking with a limp and may have been injured.

PSNI enlisted the support of Sky Watch NI on March 18 to search the border area with drones and specialised equipment.

However, today (March 19) Gardaí confirmed the tragic recovery of a body and have stood down search efforts.

Said a Gardaí spokesperson: “Following the discovery of a body, the missing person appeal in respect of Shane McEvoy (38), who was reported missing from Dundalk, Co. Louth since Friday 13th March 2026 has been stood down. Gardaí would like to thank the media for their assistance.”

Thoughts are with Shane’s friends and family at this incredibly difficult time.
