Police warning against people taking ‘law into their own hands’ in Newry

PSNI anti-social youths

Police have warned against individuals and groups taking the law into their own hands following reports of anti-social behaviour and drug misuse in the Newry area.

The PSNI say they are aware of recent reports in relation to anti-social behaviour in and around the Derrybeg and Carnagat area and also aware of reports of drug misuse in the wider Newry Area.

They have moved to reassure the public that the PSNI is always willing to work in partnership with any concerned member of the community to help all of us keep Newry safe.

Inspector Russell Vogan said: “The PSNI is responsible for law enforcement in Northern Ireland – we are here to protect local people and we are proud to serve them.

“We would caution against any individual or group against taking the law into their own hands.

“We are making real progress in detecting and preventing crime and anti-social behaviour.

“We have been working in partnership with the community, PCSP and CRJ, Housing Executive in relation to this problem which has led to a substantial reduction in anti-social behaviour in the area.

“To bring those responsible for such crimes before the courts, we need evidence to conduct the most thorough investigation possible, and help from the community.

“We would, as always, ask anyone who has any information about anti-social behaviour or drugs misuse in their area to come and speak to us.

“We continue to work with statutory and voluntary organisations, communities, as well as schools and further education colleges to address local issues in collaboration with local people.

“I understand the impact of crime on communities and I ask people to continue to support their local police in our efforts to keep Newry safe for everyone. Anyone with information or concerns should contact police on the 101 number. Alternatively information about crime can be passed anonymously via the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.”
