Newry murder victims

Detectives investigating the deaths of three people in Newry have now officially identified the man.

Det Supt Jason Murphy said: “I can now confirm that the man found dead at the property in Glin Ree Court in Newry was 38-year-old Russell Steele, originally from Scotland.”

On Friday night, police confirmed a 15-year-old girl found dead alongside her mother in the Newry apartment was strangled to death.

Allison Marimon-Herrera and her mother Giselle, who was 37, were discovered by police who forced entry into the flat on Thursday.

Police had started a murder inquiry but were not seeking anyone else in connection with the deaths.

A PSNI spokesperson said the results of a post-mortem examination of Giselle Marimon-Herrera’s body were “not definitive” but there was a “strong possibility” that she was also strangled.

Police went to the flat in Glin Ree Court in the city after a relative reported concerns that they had not been in contact with a family member for days.

The bodies were found at about 11am on Thursday morning.

Colombian radio station Caracol Radio reported that the father of the murdered woman was “willing to sell his taxi…to travel to the European country and to be able to say goodbye to one of his children, as it should be.”

Media outlets in his native Colombia were reporting how Fabian Marimon and Elizabeth Herrera were seeking the help of the Colombian government to get an emergency visa to travel.

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein Youth have started a gofundme page in a bid to raise £5,000 to help the grief-stricken family travel to Newry.

In an appeal for support Ógra Shinn Féin Newry said it was an “attack that has shocked our whole community”.

And they added: “Now, their family want desperately to fly to Ireland in order to say their final goodbyes to their daughter and granddaughter and to meet up with their other daughter who is believed to live locally.

“Fabián Marimon y Elizabeth Herrera live in Colombia and are willing to sell anything they have in order to finance that terrible journey. They are going through hell and their hands are tied as they cannot financially get themselves to Newry where they need to be.

“We we are raising funds to show the family of these two ladies that the people of Newry are there for them in their time of need and great sadness and that we will try our best as a community to facilitate their safe arrival to our town to mourn their beloved family members.

“Please consider donating to this tragic cause.”
