Police appeal after scrambler and car collide at Newry cemetery gates

Police are appealing for information following a serious two-vehicle collision at Monks Hill Road in Newry on Thursday morning.

Inspector Connolly said: “Shortly after 11.35am, it was reported that a scrambler and a silver BMW car were involved in the collision. An 18-year-old man, who was believed to have been riding the scrambler, was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.”

The incident occurred at the entrance to Monks Hill Cemetery shortly before the funeral cortege arrived for the burial of Newry man Paddy McGlennon, who had died suddenly on Sunday, September 14.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the scene, with the helicopter landing inside the cemetery grounds.

The teenager was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast having sustained serious injuries.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed one emergency ambulance and the air ambulance had been tasked to the scene.

A spokesperson said: “Following assessment and initial treatment at scene, one patient has been taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast by Air Ambulance.”

Police enquiries are ongoing. Officers have appealed to anyone with information, or dash-cam footage from the area, to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 556 18/09/25.
