Police alerted after whistle-blower raises ‘concerns’ at NMD Council

The PSNI has been alerted after a whistle-blower raised ‘concerns’ over an issue at a Northern Ireland council.

Police have confirmed that they are ‘aware’ of the issue at Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC) which the local authority says it is taking ‘seriously’.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) understands that claims about a council employee have prompted an official investigation by the local authority.

No details of the allegations have been confirmed at this stage though NMDDC says the matter is being dealt with ‘thoroughly’.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police have been made aware of an ongoing investigation by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.”

A council spokesperson added: “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is aware of concerns that have been raised through our whistle-blowing channels.

“While we do not comment on individual staffing matters, we can confirm that an investigation is currently under way. We are taking the matter seriously and are following our established procedures to ensure it is dealt with thoroughly and appropriately.

“As this is an ongoing process, it would be inappropriate to provide further comment at this time.”
