A pet owner has spoken of her devastation after her cat was “brutally tore apart” by a pack of hunting dogs which she claims entered her property on December 30 during a local hunt hosted by a Newry club.
The woman shared CCTV footage of the incident on social media, alongside a detailed account of what she says took place on Tuesday, December 30.
According to her post, hounds belonging to the Newry Hunt entered her land and were not under control.
She wrote: “I’m not one for posting on social media but when it comes to my pets I’m completely different.
“On Tuesday 30th December 2025 Newry Hunt entered my property. It was immediately clear that the hounds were not under control and as a result my pet cat was brutally tore apart by multiple hounds.
“What followed has been deeply distressing, instead of coming to me and explaining what had happened as I was there at the time, a member of the hunt attempted to dispose of my cats body by throwing him over the wall.
“After another member of the hunt come back to get a hound out of our fence, after he then walked down to where my cat was thrown and then threw him further away into the shuck to disregard the incident. All without my knowledge, without any honesty or respect.
“The failure to report the killing and the disposal of my cat’s body demonstrates a complete lack of transparency and responsibility. I consider this handling of the situation to be unacceptable and deeply distressing.
“This information was withheld from me leaving me to find the remains of my cat which was very disturbing.
“I got no face to face apology and I wasn’t reassured that any change was going to be done about this.
“The loss alone is heartbreaking, but the actions that followed have made this even more painful. No one should have to discover such a thing without explanation, and no family should be treated with such disregard on their own property.”
The post has prompted significant reaction online, with many expressing sympathy for the owner and concern over the incident.
In response to a query by Armagh I, a spokesperson for the Newry Hunt replied: “The Newry Hunt is aware of events that took place on December 30, 2025 and hunt officials have been in contact with the cat owner to apologise unreservedly for the distress this has caused.
“The hunt deeply regrets this incident and the distress caused and is taking this matter very seriously. The hunt is reviewing our procedures to prevent any recurrence.”
