Parking problems at the Quays now ‘a health and safety issue’

Parking issues at a shopping centre in Newry have been described as ” a health and safety issue”.

Sinn Fein councillor Charlie Casey has met with the manager of the Quays to discuss the issues surrounding parking at the shopping centre.

In particular, he was keen to discuss the ongoing parking problems in the Drumalane area.

“The ongoing parking problem that residents are having is now becoming a health and safety issue,” said councillor Casey.

“Residents are facing serious problems, especially pedestrians or people who have mobility issues who have to walk onto the road as the footpath is blocked.

“I fear that someone will get seriously hurt if this is not sorted out.”

Councillor Casey said the recent meeting with the shopping centre manager was “constructive” as both men share concerns about the issue.

He added: “Although there is a massive amount of parking spaces within the confines of the shopping Centre, people are still parking on the Drumalane Road and Fathom line.

“This is regrettable and motorists should use the centre parking space available.

“It now has got to a stage that the roads and enforcement agencies really need to take appropriate action against those motorists who continually obstruct pedestrians and who have no thought or care for residents of this area.”
