Residents have been evacuated from their homes in Newry following a security alert.
Barcroft residents are being housed in local community centre as police and army technical officers attend the scene of a suspicious object in the area this evening (Wednesday).
Motorists and pedestrians are advised cordons are currently in place and are asked to avoid the area at present.
Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins has said that an ongoing incident in the Barcroft area is causing serious disruption for local residents.
The Newry Armagh MLA said: “The PSNI is dealing with an ongoing incident in the Barcroft area involving a suspect device.
“The police are calling on the public to avoid the area and I urge people to co-operate with the policing operation.
“This incident is causing serious disruption to the lives of local residents, some of whom have had to leave their homes.
“The local Barcroft Community Centre is being made available for any residents evacuated from their homes.
“Those responsible for this disruption have no regard for the people of Barcroft and anyone who has any information which can assist the investigation should bring it forward to the police.”
