A Newry man who rang his sister whilst driving to see if she wanted anything from the Chinese takeaway has been handed three penalty points.

Brendan Markey, of Barcroft Park, pleaded guilty to using a mobile phone whilst driving at the city’s Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Court heard the 51-year-old was detected driving a van on Monaghan Street, Newry on August 20.

When stopped by police the defendant gave full admissions to the offence.

Markey told officers that he had been going to get a Chinese takeaway and had phoned his sister to enquire whether she wanted anything.

Defence counsel stated: “Mr Markey does have a varied record but his last offence dates back to 2012.”

The defendant was handed three penalty points and ordered to pay a fine of £100, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within four weeks.
