Man in his 60s dies in south Armagh house fire

A man in his 60s has died following a house fire in south Armagh late on Friday night.

The blaze broke out at a property in the Park View area of Cloghouge – just outside Newry – around midnight.

Another person was taken from the scene and transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where their condition is understood to be critical.

SDLP MLA for the area, Justin McNulty, commented: “I’ve just left the scene of a sadly fatal house fire overnight at Park View in Cloghouge.

“My sympathies with the family, friends and community of the gentleman who was sadly deceased.

“I know there is another person in the Royal and I pray they are able to make a full recovery.”

Sinn Fein MLA Liz Kimmins said: “Sad news this morning in Cloughogue following the death of one of our neighbours in a house fire in Park View, with another man taken to hospital.

“PSNI and forensics remain at the scene.

“Sending my sincere condolences to the family of the deceased man and hoping the second man makes a speedy recovery.”
